It was no surprise to his friends when Dr. Cornelius Phillips breathed his last at his residence on West Main Street Sunday morning after a lingering illness of contumption. He was 49 years of age and had been an invalid for some time. Mr. Phillips enlisted in Co. I, 11th Indiana Infantry April 16, 1861 and afterward acted as surgeon until finally he became First Assistant Surgeon with headquarters at Philadelphia. At the close of the war returned to this county and began the practice of medicine at Pleasant Hill in partnership with Dr. JH Cruse. Jan 1, 1864 he was married to Miss Elsie J. Moore of Wayne Township who with three children survive him. The funeral services took place from the family residence Tuesday forenoon and interment at Whitlock. kbz
